Small to medium-sized trees; branchlets covered with short, brown hairs; young shoots silvery-hairy. Leaves elliptic, lanceolate to oblanceolate; margins regularly to irregularly toothed, occasionally entire; petiole to c. 5 mm long. Flowers mostly solitary in axils. Perianth segments in 2 whorls. Male flowers with numerous stamens and staminodes. Female flowers with numerous carpels, usually with staminodes. Fruiting receptacle cup-or urn-shaped, enclosing the c. 10–30 silky, awned achenes.
