Ptychostomum rubens
(Mitt.) D.T.Holyoak & N.PedersenDioicous. Asexual reproduction by bulbils in leaf axils or globose, crimson to red rhizoidal tubers clustered at stem base. Tufts or rarely turfs on soil, dull green, olive or with reddish tints. Stems 10–20 mm long, covered with pale brown rhizoids. Leaves erect-spreading when moist, more erect and narrowed when dry, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, c. 2 mm long, o.5 mm wide; apex acute or acuminate; costa short excurrent; margin remotely denticulate toward apex or entire, plane or revolute in basal half, with 2–4 marginal rows of narrower cells forming a distinct border; laminal cells in apical half 40–60 μm long, 16–20 μm wide. Seta c. 20 mm long, red-brown to brown. Capsule clavate to pyriform, 2–3 mm long, not distinctly curved when dry. Operculum low-conic.
Recorded in Victoria from White Bridge near Mount Buller. Also QLD and NSW. New Zealand, Malesia, India, Japan, Europe and North America.
