Two varieties, with L. tasmanica var. tasmanica occurring in Victoria. Lewinskya tasmanica var. parvitheca (R.Br.bis) F.Lara, Garilleti & Goffinet is endemic to New Zealand and is distinguished from L. tasmanica var. tasmanica by having multiple capsules per perichaetium, shorter setae, and generally smaller and less distinctly ribbed capsules (Fife 2017).
