Fissidens rigidulus var. rigidulus
Asexual propagules absent. Tufts or dense mats on rocks or soil, often in water. Stems 2–6 cm long, sparingly branched, central strand narrow, with rhizoids at bases and leaf axils. Leaves oblong to lanceolate, curled and twisted when dry, 2.5–4 mm long, flat to decurved; costa subpercurrent; apex acute to acuminate. Apical and dorsal laminae margins entire, with several rows of narrower elongate cells forming a border except at apex and base; cells away from margin ±isodiametric, ±quadrate to hexagonal, 6–9 μm wide, smooth. Vaginant laminae c. 3/5 leaf length, closed, with a border of several rows of narrower elongate cells. Dioicous. Seta 4–8 mm long, straw-coloured to brown. Capsule oblong, inclined to vertical, curved; theca c. 1 mm long. Calyptra smooth, cucullate. Operculum rostrate from a conic base, 0.75–1 mm long. Peristome teeth bifid.
GleP, VVP, GipP, OtP, CVU, GGr, EGU, WPro, HSF, HNF, OtR, Strz, HFE, VAlp. Widespread along and south of the Great Dividing Range in and near creeks and waterfalls. Also QLD, NSW, ACT, Tas and Macquarie Island. New Zealand, New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Americas.
