Rhizomes with internodes showing 2 lateral cortical vascular bundles in cross-section. Generative branches 5–50 cm long, herbaceous, ± straight, never 'zigzag'. Leaf sheath open or closed, persistent after distal part of lamina has fallen off. Inflorescence with 4–12 male and 4–12 female 'flowers'. Bracts enclosing anthers broadly triangular to orbicular, (0.5–)1.3–1 5(–2) mm wide.
About 12 species, in temperate regions; 2 species in Victoria.
