Shrubby perennials. Leaves alternate, often spine-tipped, usually clustered on short lateral shoots. Flowers shortly pedicellate, 1, 2 or 3 terminating the lateral shoots in a reduced raceme; sepals 5, subequal or with 2 lateral sepals larger (but not petaloid); petals 3, shortly connate, the lower one cupped below a bilobed appendage, the upper pair united to near midway; stamens usually 7, anthers dehiscing by short slits; ovary 2-locular, with 4 antler-like terminal projections. Fruit a flattened, membranous capsule; seeds pubescent, shortly arillate.
