Microlejeunea latitans
(Hook.f. & Taylor) Heinrichs, Schäf.-Verw., Pócs & S.DongWhite- to yellow-green strands and patches adhering to bark, dioicous. Specialised asexual propagules absent. Leaves remote and stem clearly visible from above, 138–205 µm long, 138–190 µm wide, directed perpendicular to stem or slightly angled in direction of stem apex; lobe lanceolate, with an acute to acuminate apex terminated by a single row of 1–3 cells and usually angled toward substrate, with straight acroscopic margin between apex and rounded corner above stem, margin close to stem c. perpendicular with acroscopic margin and straight, margin crenulate by bulging cells, almost perpendicular to curve of keel at point of fusion; lobule ovoid, 125–165 µm long, 75–110 µm wide, inflated, with a outwardly bulging keel, ending in a distinct notch at apex, with a single tooth directed parallel to stem and composed of a single straight and rounded cell; leaf cells rounded-quadrate to polygonal or oblong, 9–23 µm long, 8–22 µm wide, firm-walled, with small trigones, smooth. Underleaves divided 1/3–3/5 into two lobes, 68–100 µm long, 65–95 µm wide; lobes ligulate to ovate, slightly to distinctly divergent, separated by a narrow V-shaped to right-angled sinus, 2–4 cells wide at base, terminated by a single row of 1–3 cells. Perianth clavate, 5-keeled, with a cylindric beak at apex composed of up to 5 tiers of cells and only uppermost tier with elongate cells.
OtP, HSF. On bark of branches and trunks in cool temperate rainforest of the Otway and Yarra Ranges. Also, New South Wales, Tasmania and New Zealand.
The leaf shape of this species is distinctive and distinguishes it from other species. It looks like a pistol with the outwardly bulging keel and the lobe with straight sided margins with a rounded corner between them above the lobule.
