Lothian Waxy BluebellRhizomatous perennial; stems simple or occasionally 1- or 2-branched, erect or ascending, 15–80 cm high, glabrous or very sparsely hirsute near base, usually leafless in upper half; leaves alternate throughout, obovate near base, narrowly obovate to c. linear above, 10–40 mm long, 1–10 mm wide; margins entire, but usually with a few obscure calluses. Hypanthium obconical, 2.5–7 mm long, glabrous; calyx-lobes erect, narrow-triangular, 2.5–6 mm long, glabrous; corolla campanulate, pale blue to pale violet, often whitish outside, usually glossy, tube 3–7.5 mm long, equal to or longer than calyx-lobes, lobes elliptic to ovate, 10–23 mm long, 5.5–8.5 mm wide, acute, widely spreading; style 5.5–12 mm long, hardly constricted, lobes 3, oblong. Capsule obconical, 5–10 mm long, 3.5–5.5 mm wide. Flowers Jan.–Dec.
EGU, HSF, HNF, MonT, HFE, VAlp. Also NSW, Tas. Rather common in damp alpine and subalpine grasslands, heathlands and bog margins.
