Monoecious, creeping perennial herbs, rooting at the nodes. Leaves alternate, entire, shortly hairy, 3-veined from base; shortly petiolate, without stipules. Flowers unisexual, solitary, axillary, small, greenish; involucre of 1 bract and 2 bracteoles; perianth 4- or 5-lobed. Male flowers in axils above those bearing female flowers; stamens 4. Female flowers with short style; stigmatic hairs forming a dense deciduous tuft. Achene ellipsoid, enclosed within persistent perianth, bract and bracteoles.
