Juncus inflexus subsp. inflexus
Densely tufted perennial with horizontal or ascending rhizomes. Cataphylls shiny dark brown to almost black towards the base, to c. 12 cm long. Culms erect, grey-green, 30–70 cm high, 0.75–2.3 mm diam.; striations 10–20, widely spaced, strongly raised; pith interrupted; stomates superficial. Inflorescence fan-shaped, flowers scattered on the numerous branchlets; primary bract continuous with culm, to c. 20 cm long; prophylls present. Tepals stramineous or with a reddish-brown longitudinal band on either side of the stramineous midrib, 2.5–4.0 mm long; stamens 6, anthers 0.7–1.0 mm long. Capsules ellipsoid, distinctly mucronate, dark brown, equal to or slightly longer or shorter than the tepals, 2.5–3.0 mm long. Flowers recorded in Jan., seeds shed Jan.–Mar.
Gold, HNF. Presently only known from the Howqua River valley in the vicinity of Sheepyard Flat, where it has established in roadside depressions, improved pasture and eucalypt open-forest.
