Decne. Clay PlantainAnnual or short-lived perennial with taproot and numerous adventitious roots. Leaves rosetted, oblanceolate to narrow-oblong, mostly 6–10 cm long and 4–15 mm wide, usually obtuse, pubescent, 3-veined, margins distinctly to obscurely toothed; petiole indistinct. Spike cylindric, mostly 2–10 cm long, dense to somewhat loose; peduncles 2–15(–20) cm long, pubescent; bracts broad-elliptic, 1.5–1.8 mm long, obtuse to acuminate, margins ciliate, keel glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Sepals elliptic, 1.5–2 mm long, subequal; corolla-tube 1.5–2 mm long, lobes 1–2 mm long, spreading or reflexed; anthers 0.4–0.6 mm long, exserted. Capsule ovoid, mostly 3–3.5 mm long, 1.7–2 mm diam., constricted above midway into an acute conical beak; seeds 1–5, brownish, lower 4 elliptic, 1–1.5 mm long, apical seed smaller, irregular. Flowers Aug.–Nov.
LoM, MuM, Wim, VVP, VRiv, MSB, RobP, MuF, Gold, CVU, DunT. Also NT, SA, Qld, NSW. In Victoria mostly in the north-west but with isolated southern collections from Daylesford and Myrniong. Usually occurring on clayey soils in grassland, shrubland or woodland.
