Dense cushions to c. 30 mm tall on rocks. Stems covered in brown rhizoids, usually branched. Leaves ligulate-subualte from ovate base, often shouldered, mostly 2.2–3.2 mm long, plicate, often abaxially keeled, moderately convoluted when dry; costa subpercurrent; apex acute; margins coarsely serrate toward apex, usually weakly recurved in basal half, bistratose to tristratose in apical half, without a distinct border; cells in apical half quadrate to shortly rectangular, mostly 5–8 μm long, 5–11 μm wide, bistratose or tristratose throughout; cells near base rectangular, c. 25–60 μm long, 7–15 μm wide. Seta 2–6 mm long, yellow or yellow-brown. Capsules oblong-ovoid, 1–1.5 mm long. Operculum to c. 1.1 mm long, long-rostrate from almost flat base.
GGr, EGL, EGU, HSF, HNF, MonT, HFE, VAlp. In rocky areas in sclerophyll forest or warm-temperate rainforest, often near waterways, throughout East Gippsland with outlying occurrences at Wilsons Promontory and near Bright. Also NSW, ACT and Tas.
