Leaves 1.5–10 cm long, 0.1–4 cm wide; young leaves and the leaves of depauperate plants are often linear. Pedicel slender, ascending to spreading, 0.5–1 cm long, enlarging in fruit. Outer perianth green; inner perianth white or very pale pink. Aggregate fruit with each follicle 5–6 mm long, all united basally reminiscent of the spokes of a wheel. Flowers throughout year, particularly Oct.–Feb.

This species varies enormously in habit and size. Greatly reduced individuals are annuals, less than 15 cm high, with lamina less than 2 cm long and often less than 0.5 cm wide, and the inflorescence is few-flowered.
