Rhizome short, erect, densely scaly; scales often coarse and large. Fronds usually tufted. Stipe not articulated to rhizome, densely clothed in scales at base. Lamina 2–3-pinnate, firm; veins free; rachis deeply and narrowly grooved, groove not continuous with secondary rachis grooves. Pinnules markedly asymmetrical. Sori distant from margins, terminal on veins; indusium round, attached by central stalk; spores bilateral.
150 or so species world-wide; 4 occurring in Australia, 2 in Victoria.
