Tufted rhizomatous perennial herbs. Roots fibrous. Aerial stems several, leaves numerous along stems, distichous. Inflorescence a cymose panicle. Flowers bisexual; perianth segments free, petals slightly broader than sepals, spreading or recurved, longer than stamens; staminal filaments hairy, anthers basifixed, recurved or coiled after dehiscing; ovary superior, 3-locular, ovules many per locule; style filiform, stigma minute, capitate. Fruit a loculicidally dehiscent capsule; seeds oblong, angular, granulate, black.

A single, very variable species in Australia and New Caledonia.
