Two subspecies have been recognised within Asplenium bulbiferum; Asplenium bulbiferum subsp. gracillimum which occurs in Australia and New Zealand and Asplenium bulbiferum subsp. bulbiferum which is endemic to New Zealand. Asplenium bulbiferum subsp. gracillimum was shown by nuclear DNA sequence data to be an allooctoploid with tetraploid Asplenium bulbiferum and Asplenium hookerianum parents (Shepherd et al. 2008). It is general practice to recognise allopolyploids at the rank of species in fern taxonomy (Barrington et al. 1989) and consequently Asplenium bulbiferum subsp. gracillimum is recognised at species rank in New Zealand (de Lange & Rolfe 2010). However, in Australia this taxon is still recognised at subspecies rank following previous Australian treatments (Brownsey 1998). Profile provided under subspecies.
