Bryum pachytheca
Müll.Hal.Dioicous. Asexual reproduction by oblong, obovate or elliptic axillary bulbils on sterile stems. Mats or tufts on soil or rock, golden-green to reddish-green. Stems 5–10 mm long. Rhizoids brown to red-brown. Leaves erect to patent, not much altered when dry, elliptic to lanceolate, 0.6–1.5 mm long, weakly concave; apex acute; costa strong, excurrent as a hairpoint; hairpoint yellow or red, denticulate at tip; laminal cells in apical half rhomboidal to obliquely rectangular, 20–45 μm long, 9–15 μm wide, smooth; basal laminal cells rectangular to quadrate. Seta 5–10 mm long, red. Capsules pendent, broadly ovate, c. 2 mm long, purplish to crimson-brown. Operculum low-conic.
LoM, MuM, VVP, MuF, GipP, Gold, CVU. Widespread throughout Victoria on sandy and loamy soils and in disturbed habitats such as in town centres. All states and territories. Southeast Asia to the western Pacific.
