Tuberous herbs, perennial; branches often grooved and/or flattened. Leaves at each node equal (in Victoria) or unequal. Inflorescences axillary spikes or clusters, or flowers solitary in upper axils (in Victoria); bracteoles shorter than calyx. Flowers more or less sessile (in Victoria) or pedunculate; sepals 5, fused at base; corolla funnel-shaped; stamens usually 4; ovules 6–10 per cell. Capsule cylindric, seed-bearing hooks conspicuous; seeds usually 8–12, discoid to ellipsoid, with mucilaginous hairs.
