Anomodon
Dioicous. Asexual propagules absent. Tufts or mats on soil or rock. Secondary stems irregularly branched, covered with rhizoids ventrally; paraphyllia absent; pseudoparaphyllia absent. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, obscurely borne in three rows, wide-spreading when moist, spirally curved around stem when dry, decurrent; apex acute or acuminate, distinctly hyaline, with a long apical cell; costa single, strong, terminating in apical half well below apex; margin entire, revolute in basal half; laminal cells irregularly hexagonal, rhomboid or subquadrate, pluripapillose, becoming smooth and oblong near base; alar cells not differentiated. Sporophyte unknown.
The Victorian species probably belongs to a monotypic genus restricted to New Zealand and south-east Australia (see below).
The sole Victorian species, Anomodon tasmanicus Broth. is misplaced in this genus, as unpublished chloroplast rps4 and trnL-trnF DNA sequences suggest a close relationship with the Racopilaceae. Consequently, this species probably represents an undescribed monotypic genus (Spence 2012) and accordingly the description provided here pertains only to the Victorian species. However, this species is tentatively retained in Anomodon until revision based on these molecular findings are published.
