Lothian Hairy Annual-bluebellSingle- or few-stemmed annual or ephemeral, hirsute, usually from base to upper leaves; stems ascending to erect, 2–50 cm long, simple or few-branched, often leafless in upper half; leaves opposite for at least 3 nodes, but usually becoming alternate, obovate to ovate near base, to narrow-lanceolate above, 1–40 mm long, 0.2–11 mm wide; margins entire or weakly callus-toothed, sometimes undulate. Hypanthium barrel-shaped to globose, 0.5–3 mm long, glabrous or hirsute; calyx-lobes erect, narrow-triangular to oblong, 0.5–4 mm long, glabrous or hirsute; corolla narrowly campanulate, blue (sometimes white or pink), tube 0.5–4 mm long, subequal to calyx-lobes, lobes elliptic, 1–5(–6) mm long, 0.5–2.5 mm wide, acute; style 0.5–5.5 mm long, usually constricted in upper third to half, lobes (2–)3, oblong. Capsule ellipsoid to globose, 1–7 mm long, 0.6–6 mm wide. Flowers mostly Sep.–Nov.
LoM, MuM, Wim, GleP, Brid, VVP, VRiv, MSB, RobP, MuF, GipP, OtP, WaP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT, NIS, EGL, EGU, WPro, HSF, HNF, OtR, Strz, MonT, VAlp. Also WA, SA, NSW, Tas. Widespread throughout most of the State, but rare on clayey soils, and absent from high-rainfall or swampy areas. Usually growing on sandy or gravelly soils, but also in pockets of loamier soil on rock, and seasonally damp mossy ledges.
