Rhizome erect, often arborescent, densely scaly. Fronds tufted or spaced. Stipe and rachis scaly, rachis grooved. Lamina 1–6-pinnate, variable in shape, margin toothed or lobed; veins free. Sori rounded, borne on veins or at a vein tip; indusium rounded, attached by central stalk; spores bilateral.
About 400 species world-wide; 3 in Australia, 1 naturalised in Victoria.
