Mostly amphibious, spreading or submerged. Leaves in aquatic plants dimorphic; lower leaves linear, 5–20 mm long, 0.5–1 mm wide, 1-veined, apex emarginate; upper leaves spathulate to suborbicular, 6–10 mm long, 1.5–4 mm wide, 3–5-veined, petiolate, rosetted. Flowers solitary, the females often in opposite axils; bracteoles falcate, c. 0.7 mm long, membranous, persistent; stamen to c. 3.5 mm long; styles spreading, 1–2 mm long, deciduous. Fruit more or less circular, 1.1–1.5 mm long, 1–1.2 mm wide, slightly longer than wide, subsessile, thickened at base, dark brown; wing prominent. Flowers and fruits Aug.–Dec.

CVU, GipP, Glep, Gold, GGr, HNF, HSF, LoM, MuF, MuM, NIS, OtP, VAlp, VRiv, VVP, WaP, Wim. Also SA, NSW, Tas. Scattered and uncommon, mainly in inland parts of Victoria, in damp and swampy places. .
