Rhizome short- or long-creeping. Stipe shiny, red-brown to brown. Fronds often crowded together. Lamina 2-several times pinnately divided. Sori marginal, borne at tips of veins, small, often laterally spreading, usually becoming irregularly confluent; leaf margin usually inrolled over sori; spores tetrahedral or spherical, often black.
About 180 species world-wide; 15 occurring in Australia, 4 in Victoria. Usually growing among rocks in drier areas.
