Large-flowered Annual-bluebellSingle- or few-stemmed annual, usually hirsute near base, becoming glabrous above (rarely glabrous throughout); stems c. erect, 10–40 cm long, simple or few-branched; leaves opposite near base, usually becoming alternate and distant above, obovate near base, to narrow-lanceolate above, 2–35 mm long, 1–10 mm wide; margins usually entire, sometimes undulate. Hypanthium obovoid to barrel-shaped, 2–5 mm long, glabrous (rarely hirsute); calyx-lobes erect, narrow-triangular, 2–6 mm long, glabrous (rarely hirsute); corolla broadly campanulate, blue (sometimes whitish or yellowish outside), tube 1.5–3.5 mm long, shorter than or equal to calyx-lobes, lobes elliptic to ovate, (6–)8–12 mm long, 3–8 mm wide, acute; style 4–7 mm long, constricted at or just above midway, lobes 3, oblong. Capsule obovoid to broadly ellipsoid, 3–7 mm long, 2–4 mm wide. Flowers mostly Sep.–Nov.
Wim, VVP, VRiv, MuF, OtP, Gold, CVU, GGr, DunT, NIS, HNF, VAlp. Also NSW. Largely confined in Victoria to heavy, fertile soils, mostly of the floodplains of the Murray, lower Loddon and Campaspe Rivers (e.g. Ulupna Island, Barmah Forest, Terrick Terrick, Boort, Corop), but also near Nhill, Ballarat and Stawell, with scattered occurrences in drier hilly country near Wangaratta and the Grampians, and one near-coastal record from Torquay.
