Herbaceous or somewhat woody perennials. Leaves opposite or alternate, linear to broadly hastate, mealy with sessile vesicular hairs when young. Inflorescence a raceme or panicle; flowers small, sessile or shortly pedicellate, in clusters; terminal flower of cluster bisexual; tepals 5 (occasionally 4), finally spreading; stamens 1–3; pericarp membranous or becoming succulent in fruit. Seed horizontal, lens-shaped.
