Bryum coronatum
Schwägr.Dioicous. Asexual reproduction by axillary green or brown-green bulbils with leafy primordia. Dense tufts on soil, rock and old wood, yellowish green. Stems sparsely branched, 5–15 mm long, red-brown, covered with brown to red-brown rhizoids toward base. Leaves imbricate, erect-spreading when moist, erect and appressed and not or slightly contorted when dry, triangular or lanceolate, to 2 mm long, plane or weakly concave; apex acute to acuminate; costa excurrent as a hairpoint; hairpoint denticulate; margin entire or weakly serrulate toward apex, recurved in basal 1/2–2/3, with 2–4 rows of longer and narrower cells forming an indistinct border; laminal cells in apical half rhomboidal to elongate-hexagonal, 30–50 μm long, 8–12 μm wide; basal laminal cells quadrate. Seta 10–20 mm long, reddish brown. Capsules pendent, obloid, ellipsoid or broadly obovoid, 1.2–2.5 mm long, reddish-brown. Operculum conic, usually minutely apiculate.
HFE. Recorded from dry sclerophyll forest and woodland from scattered locations across the state (e.g. near Horsham, Heathcote, Warby Ranges and near Orbost). Also WA, SA, QLD, NSW, ACT and Tas. Widespread in tropical to warm temperate regions of the world.
