Racopilaceae
Dioicous or autoicous (not in Victoria). Asexual propagules absent or asexual reproduction by caducous leaves (not in Victoria). Stems creeping, subpinnately branched, densely tomentose ventrally with tufts of rhizoids arising near lateral leaf bases, without paraphyllia and pseudoparaphyllia, central strand narrow. Leaves terete-foliate and monomorphic (not in Victoria) or dorsiventrally flattened, with leaves in lateral rows differing from dorsal rows, stem and branch leaves similar; costa single, excurrent as a hairpoint, percurrent (not in Victoria) or subpercurrent (not in Victoria); margins entire or serrulate to serrate toward apex, without a border or with a border of 1–3 rows of linear cells (not in Victoria); laminal cells almost isodiametric, quadrate, shortly rhomboidal to elongate-hexagonal, becoming rectangular toward base or similar at base (not in Victoria), smooth or mammillose on both sides; alar cells not clearly differentiated. Pleurocarpous. Calyptra cucullate or mitrate (not in Victoria), glabrous (not in Victoria) or hairy. Seta twisted anticlockwise throughout (not in Victoria) or twisted clockwise in the upper half, twisted anticlockwise in the lower half. Capsules exserted, horizontal to erect, curved to straight, grooved or not (not in Victoria). Peristome double; exostome of 16 entire teeth or reduced to a low basal membrane (not in Victoria); endostome segments longer to slightly shorter than exostome, or rudimentary, with a low basal membrane and fugacious processes (not in Victoria); cilia present or not (not in Victoria).
Four genera and around 26 species distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, extending in the temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere; one genus in Victoria.
