Annual herbs, sometimes woody at base, usually with glandular hairs and spines. Leaves alternate, palmate, usually 5- or 7-foliate; petiole with basal or distal pulvinus, stipules often spinose. Flowers appearing somewhat zygomorphic; petals turned to apical side of flower; stamens 6, distinctly longer than petals. Capsule oblong, dehiscent, on a long, slender, recurved pedicle.
About 33 species from tropical regions of Africa and America; 1 species naturalised in Australia.
