R.Br. Leafy Purple-flagUndershrub, 30–80 cm high. Stem woody, few-branched, up to 40 cm long. Leaves linear, 10–40 cm long, 0.2–0.5 cm wide, flat, finely veined, glabrous; margin minutely hairy near base. Inflorescence with scape 10–30 cm long, glabrous. Primary bracts ovate, 4–6.5 cm long, finely striate, sparsely hairy, glabrescent, dark brown; margin dry, membranous and hyaline for a width of 2–3 mm; involucre widely open, up to 4 cm wide; inner (secondary) bracts fully exposed. Perianth tube 4–5 cm long, glabrous or pubescent; outer perianth lobes ovate to orbicular, 2–3 cm long, 1.5–2.6 cm wide; inner perianth lobes narrowly ovate. Staminal filaments 5–7 mm long, completely united. Ovary hairy. Capsule cylindric 2–4 cm long; seeds compressed-ovoid, c. 4 mm long, brown; aril present. Flowers Aug.–Oct.
GipP, EGL, EGU, WPro. Also Qld, NSW. Widespread, occurring in coastal heathlands, low woodlands and open-forests mostly eastward from Bairnsdale, with disjunct occurrences on French Is. and Wilsons Promontory.
