  Stoloniferous, perennial herb, 10–45 cm high, glandular-hairy; stolon filiform. Leaves all basal, reniform to orbicular, mostly 3–5 cm long, 2–9 cm wide, variegated above, reddish below; margins irregularly dentate; base rounded to cordate; petiole 15–21 cm long. Inflorescence 7–60-flowered. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic; sepals 5, ovate, 1.5–3.5 mm long; petals 5, white or pink, entire, the lower 2 petals lanceolate-oblong, 6–15 mm long, the upper 3 petals ovate, 2–4.5 mm long; disc semiannular; ovary superior. Capsule ovoid to globose, 4–5 mm long; seeds ovoid, c. 0.5 mm long, warted.
Native to Japan, China and Korea.
Widely cultivated as an ornamental. Recorded once in Victoria (in 1956) at the Byaduk Caves in the south west of the State.
