Trematodon mackayi
(R.Br.bis) Broth.Dioicous. Plants yellow-green. Stems simple, 2–6 mm long. Leaves erect-spreading and ±twisted, sheathing near base, contorted when dry, abruptly tapered from an oblong base to narrow subula, mostly 4–7 (–8.5) mm long towards stem apex, less than 2 mm long toward base, subula 2–3 times base length, concave in base; apex subulate; costa completely filling subula; margin entire, unistratose; laminal cells of leaf base rectangular or irregularly polygonal, 70–105 (–120) μm long, 12–20 μm wide. Seta 8–15 (–25) mm long, yellow. Capsules erect or inclined, cylindric or oblong with a long tapering neck equal to or longer than urn, (1.5–) 2–3.8 (–5) mm long, straight or curved. Peristome reduced to a hyaline membrane. Operculum rostrate from conic base, c. 1/3 capsule length.
OtP, EGL. Recorded from Croajingolong National Park in the far east and from near Chapple Vale in the west from open peaty soil in wet heath. Also NSW and Tas. New Zealand.
One of the few moss species potentially promoted by fire (Fife 2016).
