Two varieties with L. rupestris var. rupestris occurring in Victoria. Lewinskya rupestris var. papillosa (Lewinsky) F.Lara, Garilleti & Goffinet is endemic to New Zealand and is distinguished from L. rupestris var. rupestris by the taller and more conspicuously branched papillae on the cells and its glaucous appearance when dry (Fife 2017).
