Two varieties, with Ulota lutea var. lutea occurring in Victoria. Ulota lutea var. robusta is endemic to Tasmania and is distinguished from Ulota lutea var. lutea by its larger size, with tufts being 15–25 mm tall, and by its shorter setae and capsules, to 3 mm and 1 mm long respectively.
