Glabrous perennial herbs; stems prostrate, rooting at nodes. Leaves sessile, alternate or in fascicles at nodes, entire, flat, succulent, attenuate towards base. Inflorescence condensed axillary racemes, or flowers solitary in axils. Flowers strongly zygomorphic; bracteoles present; sepals 5, free above hypanthium; corolla tubular, opened along the posterior slit, 1-sided, reddish-brown outside, usually whitish inside, lobes c. equal, unwinged; stamens free, epigynous, anthers free; ovary inferior, 2-celled, ovules numerous, in 2 rows, style simple, stigma emarginate, indusium more or less horizontal, 2-lipped, minutely ciliate. Fruit more or less indehiscent, fleshy; seeds lenticular, with a swollen mucilaginous wing.
