Dioicous. Asexual reproduction rarely by pale yellow-brown rhizoidal tubers. Tufts on rock, glossy, red or with red tints. Stems 10–25 mm long. Rhizoids red to red-brown. Leaves imbricate, ovate to oblong-lanceolate, 2–3.5 mm long, concave to carinate; apex acute, mucronate; costa short-excurrent as a mucro; margin serrulate at apex, recurvedm, without a border; laminal cells of apical half hexagonal-rhomboidal, 30–60 μm long, 15–20 μm wide; basal laminal cells quadrate. Seta c. 20 mm long, red. Capsules pendulous, pyriform, 3–4 mm long, red to red-brown. Operculum conic.
Known in Victoria from records from Mount Pilot near Beechworth and from the foreshore at Port Melbourne. Also WA, SA, NSW and Tas.
