Plagiobothrys canescens
Benth. Valley Popcorn FlowerDecumbent to ascending, branches spreading from base, to c. 40 cm long. Leaves linear to linear-oblanceolate, mostly 1–5 cm long, 1–10 mm wide, apex rounded, base cuneate, margins flat, villous. Bracts longer than sepals at anthesis. Pedicels to c. 2 mm long; sepals 5, narrow-ovate, initially 3–4 mm long, acute, villous, tips coppery in bud, connate in basal third, elongating to c. 6 mm, becoming tough, erect and loosely sheathing the ripening mericarps; corolla 2–3 mm long, glabrous, white, tube much longer than lobes; anthers narrow-ovoid, c. 0.4 mm long; ovary 4-lobed, style c. 0.5 mm long. Mericarps usually 4, 1–2 mm long, beaked, outer face papillate, longitudinally and transversely ridged forming a rectangular reticulum, dull, white. Flowers Aug.–Dec.
VVP, RobP, MuF, Gold, NIS. Also naturalised NSW. Native to California. In Victoria known only from 3 collections along the Murray River in the vicinity of Yarrawonga from cultivated land and disturbed sites.
