Thallus pinnate, 0.5–1.5 (–2) cm long, (1–) 1.5–3 (–4) mm wide, convex ventrally and plane to concave dorsally in transverse section, the concavity particularly pronounced behind apices and appearing spoon-like, with acute to winged margin, often forming a white border when dry due to marginal cells with thick walls, (5–) 7–10 (–12) cells thick, with a distinct notch at apex that gets overtopped by growth on both sides and protected by ventral mucilage papillae, with a smooth cuticle. Oil bodies throughout, 1–2 per cell. Calyptra 2–4 mm long, with pachydermal cells thick-walled, pigmented and forming multicellular clumps.
