Dioicous or rarely synoicous. Asexual reproduction by globose rhizoid tubers. Tufts on soil, green to brown-green or rarely red-green. Stems 2–10 mm long, covered toward base with pale brown rhizoids. Leaves erect-spreading when moist, more erect and narrowed when dry, narrowly lanceolate, 1–2 mm long, 0.3–0.4 mm wide; costa short-excurrent; margin serrulate near apex, recurved toward base, without a border; laminal cells in apical half 50–80 μm long, 12–14 μm wide, narrower and longer toward margin; basal laminal cells short-rectangular. Seta 10–20 mm long, brown to red-brown. Capsules narrowly ellipsoid, 1.5–2 mm long, red. Operculum low-conic.
Recorded in Victoria from a bog on the Bogong High Plains and from the Melbourne Metropolitan area. Also QLD. New Zealand, New Guinea and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
