Two poorly demarcated subspecies, with one subspecies, Hypnodendron vitiense subsp. australe occurring in Victoria. The nominate subspecies occurs in north-east Queensland and the Ryukyu Islands to Samoa and is distinguished from Hypnodendron vitiense subsp. australe by the stipe leaves being widest at the insertion and by the usually numerous geminate teeth on the margins of the branch leaves (Touw 1971). See Hypnodendron vitiense subsp. australe for full profile.
