Roots tuberous; rhizome spreading, c. 5 mm diam. Stems numerous, unbranched, to 1 m high. Leaves in lax clusters, spathulate to elliptic-lanceolate, flat with a twisted petiole, 3–10 cm long, 10–35 mm wide. Inflorescence erect to spreading, unbranched; flowers few–many, funnel-shaped, reddish with green margins, spotted purplish-brown; sepals narrowly spathulate, 4–7 cm long; petals as long as sepals but narrower; stamens and trifid style shorter than perianth segments. Capsule 1–2 cm long. Seeds numerous. Flowers early summer.
GipP, HSF. Native to South America, cultivated as an ornamental. Currently known in Victoria from a single population in Beaumaris.
