Bryum subapiculatum
HampeDioicous. Asexual reproduction by globose, bright orange-red rhizoidal tubers. Tufts on soil or burnt or rotting wood, green. Stems 4–8 mm long, densely covered in brownish rhizoids at base. Leaves broadly lanceolate, 0.6–1.4 mm long, somewhat concave; apex acuminate; costa short-excurrent; margin remotely denticulate toward apex, plane or slightly recurved in basal half, with 1–2 marginal rows of longer and narrower cells forming an inconspicuous border; laminal cells in apical half 30–50 μm long, 10 μm wide; basal laminal cells short-rectangular. Seta 16–20 mm long, brown to red-brown. Capsule inclined to pendulous, ovate-cylindric, 2–4 mm long. Operculum low-conic.
Wim, GipP, VAlp. In varying habitats in Victoria from subalpine vegetation near Mount Baw Baw and on Mount William to salt lake edges in the north-west. Also in WA, SA, QLD, NSW and Tas. New Zealand, New Guinea and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
