Ascending to erect annual to c. 60 cm high. Stems glabrous or glabrescent. Leaves long-petiolate, ovate to rhombic, lamina 15–35 mm long, 5–15 mm wide; margin often finely undulate. Flowers unisexual, in narrow axillary cymose clusters to c. 10 mm long; bracts and bracteoles acuminate but not spinescent, c. half to three-quarters as long as tepals; tepals 3, oblong to oblanceolate, 1.5–2.2 mm long, acute; stamens 3. Utricle circumsciss, exceeding perianth, flattened-globoid, c. 2–2.6 mm long, finely wrinkled or blistered, usually c. longitudinally in upper half, transversely in lower; seed biconvex, brown, shiny, 1–1.5 mm diam. Flowers Mar.–Apr.
