Annual herbs with yellow latex. Leaves lobed with spine-tipped teeth. Inflorescence a cyme, flowers shortly pedicellate; sepals 3 (in Australia) or 2, spine-tipped, caducous; petals 4–6 in 2 whorls; stamens numerous; stigmas 4–6, funnel-like, fused along inner face, virtually sessile; ovary 1-locular. Capsule dehiscing from apex to about midway, into as many valves as there are stigmas; seeds numerous, spherical, shortly arillate.
About 10 species from southern North America (including Hawaii), and South America; 2 species naturalised in Australia.
