Plants annual, 2–6 cm tall. Roots at stem bases, few, fine. Stems erect, leafy throughout, undivided or branched once or twice near base. Leaves in 4 rows, sessile, all similar in shape, lanceolate, pointed, 1.5–2 mm long. Sporophylls broadly ovate, spread along stem (not in strobili), replacing foliage leaves. Sporangia globose or slightly flattened, megasporangia and microsporangia mixed.

Brid, CVU, DunT, EGL, EGU, GipP, Glep, Gold, GGr, HSF, LoM, NIS, OtP, VVP, WaP, WPro, Wim. Temperate parts of all states. Found in moist shady sites (e.g. verges of swamps or water-courses), coastal heathland, or more exposed depressions, mostly in south-west and coastal Victoria.
