Lesser HawkbitPerennial herb 15–40 cm high, with sparse to dense, spreading 2- or 3-fid hairs. Leaves c. petiolate, narrow-oblanceolate to oblanceolate, 2–20(–30) cm long, 5–20 mm wide, acute to obtuse, entire to pinnatifid. Capitulum solitary, nodding in bud; scapes 1–many; involucral bracts glabrous or variably hispid, the inner series narrow-lanceolate, 7–11 mm long, recurved and boat-like at base in fruit, outer bracts much smaller and narrower. Ligules exceeding involucre by 4–10 mm, yellow, the outermost often brown or purplish on the abaxial surface. Cypselas 4–5.5 mm long; outer ones curved, not beaked; pappus of scales 0.5–1 mm long; inner cypselas more or less straight, with beak 0.5–1 mm long; pappus of 2 series of bristles, brownish, the outer ones small, simple, inner ones 3–8 mm long, plumose. Flowers mostly Aug.–Feb.
