Rhizomatous, mostly semi-aquatic perennials or annuals. Leaf-blades expanded; ligules ciliate. Inflorescence a panicle with capillary branches. Spikelets 2-flowered, the lower male and the upper female, or both bisexual; glumes persistent, obtuse, dorsally compressed; lemma and palea hardened, equal to glumes; stamens 3.
About 60 species, largely tropical; 4 in Australia, only 1 extending to the southern mainland States (not in WA).
