The grass has persisted for some years as a troublesome weed around grain storage areas near Geelong but does not appear to have become naturalized elsewhere. It is not regarded as a fully naturalised member of the Victorian flora. It is otherwise known in Australia only from the Newcastle area, New South Wales. It is native to South America.
