Annual or prennial herbs with alternate, finely dissected pinnate leaves. Flowers usually solitary; perianth of 2 dissimilar whorls; sepals usually 5; petals 3–20, brightly coloured and glossy; nectaries absent; stamens numerous; carpels numerous. Achenes numerous, wrinkled, forming an elongated head at maturity.
About 30 species, from Eurasia and the Mediterranean region; 1 species in Australia.
