Tufted perennials. Leaves flat, folded or involute; ligule membranous. Inflorescence a panicle; spikelets several-flowered, laterally compressed; glumes 2, the lower 1–3-nerved, the upper 3-nerved, persistent; lemma (3–)5–7(11)-nerved, membranous to chartaceous, keeled dorsally, acute, obtuse or emarginate at apex, awnless or with a short, fine awn.
