Annual herbs with slender taproots. Leaves alternate, basal and cauline, palmately lobed. Inflorescence a few–many-flowered terminal raceme or panicle. Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic; sepals 5, upper sepal with basal spur; petals 2, united into a single spurred nectary which is enclosed by the sepal spur; stamens numerous; carpel 1, ovules many. Fruit a many-seeded follicle.
About 60 species of temperate and subtropical regions of Eurasia; 1 species naturalised in Australia.
